J-Beauty Edit is an independently run publication based in Japan. We help English-speaking readers understand Japanese skincare, makeup, sunscreen, and hair care before they buy. This page explains how we research products, when we can claim firsthand experience, and how affiliate links are handled.
How we research
We start with Japanese brand and manufacturer pages, official labels, and product instructions. For regulatory or safety-related details, we use relevant public or industry sources where available. Retailer listings may help us check price, size, and availability at a particular point in time.
Customer reviews and third-party publications can add useful context, but they do not replace official product information. We describe broad review patterns only when the available material supports them, and we do not invent quotations or experiences. If an important detail cannot be confirmed, we leave it out or say that it remains unverified.
What being based in Japan adds
Japanese product pages often contain details that are missing from overseas listings. Being in Japan allows us to read those sources directly and, when practical, check current packaging, local instructions, prices, and Japan-only versions. An article will say clearly when a store, package, or product was checked in person.
Formulas, packaging, prices, and stock can change. A verification date shows when information was last checked, not a guarantee that it has stayed unchanged. Please confirm current details with the brand or retailer before purchasing.
Reviews and hands-on experience
Most J-Beauty Edit articles are researched from official and other publicly available sources. We do not write as though we used a product when we did not.
When an article includes firsthand use, it will explain how the product was obtained, how long it was used, the relevant skin or hair type, and what was observed. A personal trial is not a clinical test, and one person’s experience may not match another’s.
